When Life Gives You Lemons: Dealing with Failure

Dealing with FailureWhether its school, work, or relationships, failure is inevitable. They can leave you unmotivated to get back up again. But before you decide to make camp in your black hole of despair, you might want to try these easy ways to re-color your world.

1. Decide Whether to Dive or Ditch

When you find yourself downing a whole tub of Ben & Jerry’s while singing Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” at the top of your lungs, then it might be time to actually answer the question: do you dive back in or finally ditch? People are petrified of the thought of quitting because they think that it defines their whole being. There is no shame in admitting or acknowledging that something isn’t good for you anymore. If your current job is prohibiting you from actually growing, if the course you’ve chosen isn’t what you’re passionate about anymore, then quit. Do yourself a favor, start over, and find your happiness. Forbes featured an article by Cheryl Connor called “When It’s Okay To Quit”, it’s a good read if you’re trying to decide whether or not you should continue to fight or finally let go. Whichever you decide, don’t be ashamed!, You did a good thing, and everyone deserves a do-over.

2. Find that Old Flame

This does not pertain to rekindling the flame of a relationship, but if that applies to you then go for it! The flame specifically refers to the burning passion that drives a person to go after something in life. More often than not, when people are faced with defeat, that flame dies down; and the only way to warm yourself back up is to find something that will genuinely make you happy again. Whether it’s finding a new hobby, travelling, making new friends, taking some time alone, or learning a new skill; anything that gets your blood pumping again can definitely shake off that post-rejection funk.

As the saying goes, “a bored man is a dangerous man”, use this time to keep yourself from sulking or overthinking. Studies show that dogs are good for improving health and dealing with depression. Which is why this could be the perfect time to get a furry companion.

3. Make a New Plan of Attack

Now that you’ve established what doesn’t work for you, take that lesson and engrave it in your mind and heart. There’s no point going thru this painful process if you don’t learn from your mistakes. This might be the hardest part of the three, but it deserves to be mentioned. Unfortunately, there is no escaping this cliche of a statement. Failure is not without purpose, it either tells you to try harder, or try something else. Whichever one it is of the two, you always apply what you’ve taken from the past and make a whole new game plan to ensure that you get better results. If you don’t, you’ll be stuck in the same endless and exhausting cycle of trying and failing at the same thing. Learn and level up, that’s how you stay ahead of the game.

As much as it hurts, use this time to get motivated. There’s nothing worse than a person with a broken spirit, find your passion, regain your strength, and give it your all. It’s not the end of the world, so get back up and try again. Although it may never get any easier, it won’t be difficult forever, because each try makes you better and better.
